Flatback Earring Post Length Guide: 5mm vs 6mm vs 8mm

Choosing the right flatback post length can make a big difference in how your earring looks and feels. A post that's too short may feel tight or press against the skin, while one that's too long can shift, snag or prevent the flatback from sitting neatly against your ear.

At A Pierce of Life, many of our flatback earrings are available in 5mm, 6mm and 8mm post lengths, so you can choose a fit that works for your piercing and anatomy.

5mm vs 6mm vs 8mm: What's the Difference?

The measurement refers to the usable length of the post, from the back of the flat disc to the end of the post.

5mm — A Close, Snug Fit

5mm posts work well for thinner anatomy and healed piercings where you prefer a very close fit. They may suit thin earlobes, tragus piercings, some healed cartilage piercings, and placements where a flush look is preferred.

Because 5mm provides less extra room, it is generally better suited to fully healed piercings without swelling.

6mm — Our Standard Length

For many people, 6mm is the most versatile flatback post length. It commonly works well for healed lobe piercings, helix piercings, many cartilage piercings and everyday flatback earrings.

If you're unsure whether to choose 5mm or 6mm for a healed piercing, 6mm usually provides a little more room while still giving a neat fit.

Is 6mm or 8mm Better for a Helix?

For a fully healed helix, 6mm is often a good starting point. If your cartilage is thicker or you need additional room, an 8mm post may be more comfortable.

8mm — Extra Room

8mm posts provide more space and may suit thicker earlobes, thicker cartilage, piercings that naturally need more room, or situations where a longer post has been recommended. An 8mm post will usually have more visible space behind the ear than a 5mm or 6mm post.

What Post Length Should I Choose?

There isn't one universal size for every ear. Ear thickness, piercing angle and exact placement can all affect the fit.

Piercing Suggested Starting Point
Thin lobe 5–6mm
Standard healed lobe 6mm
Helix 6mm
Tragus 5–6mm
Thicker cartilage 6–8mm
Thicker anatomy / extra room needed 8mm

These are general recommendations rather than strict rules. If your piercing is new, irritated or still swelling, follow the sizing advice given by your professional piercer.

A Better Fit for Everyday Wear

Once your piercing is fully healed, choosing the right post length helps your flatback sit more comfortably and securely.

Many A Pierce of Life flatbacks are available with 5mm, 6mm or 8mm posts, making it easier to find a length suited to your ear rather than settling for one standard size.

Our internally threaded flatbacks are also designed without a traditional butterfly backing, creating a smooth, flat surface behind the ear that's comfortable for everyday wear — including sleeping.
